BCC Shared Spaces Toolkit

CLIENT - Belfast City Council

Cars are a pain in the bum, right? They need all that space that we could use for something better like a street party. So how do you do that? I mean you could just drag a sofa across the end of the street but then the police might come and tell you to stop.

Coming out of Covid Belfast City Council wanted to democratise street parties, to make it something that anyone could do if they got together with their neighbours. Adam from DCI is no stranger to the potential bureaucracy involved in closing roads having run Culture Night for six years and all of us like a party, so we were the perfect choice to pull together a tool kit for ‘How to have a street party.’

Of course, it starts with closing the road but then it’s about how to have a good party. And also how to make sure you do it in a way that brings everyone together and doesn’t annoy all your neighbours. There’s no point in doing all that work if it’s not gonna be a good party after all.
