Belfast Entries

CLIENT - BELFAST CITY COUNCIL

Belfast Entries was an award-winning creative placemaking intervention in fourteen city centre alley ways. Belfast City Council wanted to promote new ways of navigating the city centre and create vibrant, welcoming, playful places reflecting the distinctive identity of Belfast.

Our approach centred on the flourishing contemporary street art scene in Belfast. We saw street art as the perfect medium to communicate the less ordered, edgier character of the Entries as places of encounter, innovation and dissent.

We commissioned twenty-one artists from across the UK and Ireland to create almost forty artworks, each one taking inspiration from the past, present and potential future of these formerly neglected spaces. Large-scale murals were complemented by smaller ‘Easter Eggs’, which engaged passers-by in playful challenges and provocations.

We also partnered with Form Native design to commission interpretive panels for the Entries. Each is introduced by prize-winning Belfast poet Gail McConnell and contain hints and reflections of the themes that inspired the artworks.
